The Putrajaya Line stands as the second installment in the Klang Valley MRT Project, strategically catering to a corridor inhabited by approximately 2 million people. Spanning from Kwasa Damansara, a burgeoning township in northwest Kuala Lumpur, to the federal administrative center of Putrajaya, this line plays a vital role in connecting southern suburbs and enhancing regional mobility.

Covering a distance of 57.7 kilometers, the Putrajaya Line comprises 44.2 kilometers of elevated tracks and 13.5 kilometers of underground tunnels. Operating through a network of 36 stations, with 27 elevated and 9 underground, it further incorporates 5 provisional stations—Rubber Research Institute (RRI), Bandar Malaysia Utara, Bandar Malaysia Selatan, Taman Teknologi, and Taman Universiti—strategically positioned for future utilization.

Featuring 10 interchange stations and connecting points along its alignment, the Putrajaya Line facilitates seamless transitions for commuters between existing and upcoming rail lines. A total of 17 stations along the route are equipped with park and ride facilities, offering 6,416 bays to enhance commuter convenience.

The government’s approval for the Putrajaya Line was announced in 2014, prompting a Public Inspection exercise from May to August 2015 for public input and objections. The final approval for the Putrajaya Line Railway Scheme was granted in October 2015, marking the green light for land acquisition and procurement processes.

The groundbreaking ceremony, presided over by then Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, occurred on September 15, 2016, at the future site of the Putrajaya Sentral MRT Station, signifying the commencement of construction.

Phase One operations of the Putrajaya Line, spanning from Kwasa Damansara to Kampung Batu, were inaugurated by then Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on June 16, 2022, with the remaining section launched by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim on March 16, 2023.

With an anticipated initial ridership exceeding 104,000 passengers daily, the Putrajaya Line is poised to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and significantly contribute to achieving the targeted modal share of 40% public transport use within the Greater Kuala Lumpur region.
